1609 Biberach a.d. Riss – 1684 Augsburg
Maler u. Radierer. Nach seiner Lehre in Memmingen Wanderschaft über Stuttgart u. Basel nach Italien. Dort mehrjähriger Aufenthalt in Rom u. Neapel, wo ihn die dortigen Kleinmaler, v.a. Salvatore Rosa, stark beeinflussten. Nach Zwischenstationen in Dresden u. Ulm seit 1652 dauerhaft in Augsburg ansässig. Schönfeld gilt als der wichtigste deutsche Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts neben Adam Elsheimer, Werke in den wichtigsten deutschen Sammlungen, daneben Schlössern, Dom- u. Klosterkirchen, ferner in Rom u. Stockholm.

Framed by surrounding accessories in the flat and modeled by light in space, the merging of the oval shape finds ist completion in the realm of the gods, which forms a circle around the main group consisting of Anchises and Aeneas.
